A red fuel cap is used on diesels, so that's why the mistake was made.

Silly mistake, but so easily done even more so when running both diesel and petrol vehicles.

A couple of years ago I did this to my Volvo 340 GL. No harm done.

Mis-fuelling a petrol engine with diesel isn't as bad as going the other way round and depending on how much diesel you put in, you could've run it without having to drain the tank. You're lucky the 240 has a drain plug in the petrol tank. Fortunately, Monica seems to be none the worse for it. Laura is definitely her mum's daughter. The petrol/diesel mix could either be added back in gradually (5 litres for every full tank) or be used as a parts cleaner.

Keep the bad fuel and use it in one of those cheap diesel heaters. Failing that. Diesel is good for unseizing things.

My brother did this and was adamant he hadn't put diesel in the tank. The car would start after lots of cranking, but ran very rough with clouds of very light grey exhaust. After hooking up the scan tool and finding no codes, then scratching my head for a while, I pulled the tank sender and took a sample. Stinking diesel fuel. Drained the tank, added petroleum plus an additive to clean out the injectors and the engine is still running fine. Nissan VQ engine for the win 😆

I did the same with my daily driver before christmas was a real shame cost me a fair bit of money to fix too, luckily i didn't move the car though.

Oh dear., my dad had a cavalier td years ago, it had a sticker stating’ DIESEL D**KHEAD, above the fuel filler cap He found it hilarious and it was there when he bought it

I put about £2 of diesel in a car once, realised and then just brimmed it with petrol to dilute it and luckily got away with it.

When my dad did that we used the fuel in our lawn mower. Only trouble was you were walking up and down the garden in a blue haze

Got to ask how this could even happen? Isnt a diesel filling nozzle wider than a petrol one so it won't fit, to stop this exact thing occurring?

I can honestly say that I have NEARLY made this mistake, but not quite. However, there is a company in our town called Fuel Doctor, they run a fleet of at least 4, could be 5 vans and all they do is rescue motorists who have fuelled up with the wrong fuel. So, it must be a pretty common occurrence still, therefore don't feel too bad about it Lewis! You are not alone.

Naaahhh, those cars are well built. Maybe the worst thing that could have happened was that the car didn't start, right? The other way around (petrol in a diesel) would have been much worse 😂😂... I'd like to see petrol trying not to detonate at a compression of 20:1 or similar 😅

Does that 240 have the B230A engine in it?

Cab you not in your great fabrications, put the weird baffle jn thr filler to avoid this
